Research Area: Optimization, Statistics, Geophysics
About me: Aleksandr Y. Aravkin was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. He came to Seattle with his family in 1992. He attended the University of Washington from 2000-2010, earning undergraduate degrees in mathematics and computer science, and graduate degrees in statistics (M.S.) and mathematics (Ph. D). He currently holds a postdoctoral appointment in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia. His interests include robust statistical modeling, numerical optimization, and algorithm design, with applications to Kalman filtering/smoothing, computer vision, and large scale inverse problems such as PDE constrained optimization.
