Abstract

This talk presents recent results in the theory of low-rank matrix recovery as heuristics for seismic practitioners. In the theory of matrix completion, we discuss the spectral gap as a means to quantify how successful a given sub sampling scheme will be for trace interpolation. Additionally, we consider previously proposed random sampling techniques and develop conditions on the sampling distribution that guarantees successful low-rank matrix recovery. The results apply to time-jittered acquisition, off-the-grid trace interpolation and source separation for simultaneous towed-streamer marine acquisition. Put together, the talk provides practical instruments that help design acquisition schemes in favor of rank penalization techniques.
